What we treat

Schizophrenia

A treatable condition affecting perception, thinking, and motivation. With consistent treatment, many people work, study, and live independently.

Schizophrenia affects how a person perceives, thinks, and engages with the world. It is a medical condition, it is treatable, and the outlook is considerably better than its public reputation suggests. With consistent treatment and support, many people study, work, maintain relationships, and live independently.

What it actually involves

Symptoms are usually grouped in three ways.

Positive symptoms are experiences added to ordinary perception: hallucinations, most often auditory, and delusions, meaning beliefs held with complete conviction that others do not share. These are typically what prompt someone to seek help.

Negative symptoms are things reduced or absent: motivation, emotional expression, speech, social drive. These get mistaken for laziness or depression, including by people who care about the person, and they often affect daily life more than the positive symptoms do.

Cognitive symptoms affect concentration, working memory, and planning. They are less visible and matter a great deal for work and study.

Side effects are a treatment issue, not a complaint

Antipsychotic medication is the foundation of treatment and it works. It also carries a real side effect burden: weight gain, sedation, movement effects, and metabolic changes among them.

The most common reason treatment stops working is that someone stops taking it, and the most common reason for that is side effects nobody adjusted. So side effects are treated as a clinical problem to solve, not as the price of care. If something is intolerable, say so, and we change it rather than talking you into enduring it.

Metabolic monitoring, including weight, blood glucose, and lipids, is a standing part of care here rather than something remembered occasionally.

Family and supports

Where you want it, involving family or other supports improves outcomes measurably. Where you do not, that is your decision. Either way, care is directed by you.
